About the Society...

We cordially invite all who are not yet members of our society to join with us in furthering family history research in Aiken and Barnwell counties.

Our research area embraces all of the post-Revolutionary Winton County, later to become Barnwell County, including present-day Allendale and Bamberg counties and part of Aiken County. It also includes those parts of Edgefield, Lexington, Orangeburg, and Barnwell counties that were taken to form Aiken County on 1871.

Membership dues were recently changed to $20 per year due to increasing printing costs. To join the Society, simply mail a check to the following address:

ABGS
PO Box 415
Aiken, SC 29802

Please include surnames you are researching in the area, your email address and telephone number. Except for the phone number, this information will be published in our quarterly Journal. (let us know if you do not want this information published!)

Members

Our local membership combines the knowledge and experience of natives of the area and persons who came here from elsewhere. We have many out-of-town members who are researching roots in our area.

Meetings

The Society usually meets on the third Sunday of each month in Aiken (except June, July, and August). Meetings are open to the public.

Library

Society volunteers help to maintain the genealogical collections at the Aiken County Public Library in Aiken. The Society regularly purchases genealogical books, journals, and records on film for donation to the library. There is a growing vertical file of family charts and other information.

Publications

The quarterly News and Journal is the Society's regular members' publication. In addition we have published surname lists, cemetery books, and a library guide and have more books in preparation.

Co-Operative Efforts

We support and work with other organizations seeking to preserve history and genealogy in our area. We exchange publications with many such groups in South Carolina and other states.
